It is reported that Norilsk Nickel’s nickel output for the first 9 months of 2008 was 218,474 tonnes, mainly in line with about 219,000 tonnes produced during the same period in 2007.
As per reports, Norilsk Nickel informed that its copper output went up to 316,639 tonnes in the first 9 months of 2008 from 312,000 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2007. It also informed that the output of Palladium in January to September 2008 was 2.124 million ounces. This included output at its Polar and Kola divisions in Russia as well as at its units in Finland, Australia, Botswana and South Africa. But this did not include its US unit Stillwater Mining Co.
It may be noted that earlier Mr Vladimir Srzhalkovsky CEO of Norilsk had said that it would consider in December 2008 whether to cut production of its non Russian units due to falling demand owing to the financial crisis.
