Exim News Service reported that the Shipping Corporation of India’s largest cellular new building, the 4,400 TEU SCI Mumbai was given a warm and ceremonial welcome at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port recently.
On its maiden call and inaugural voyage, the vessel under SCI’s SMILE service, loaded containers for Jebel Ali and Dammam, en route to Colombo. Subsequently, it was to be routed to SCI’s ISE service on the UK lane.
Mr S Hajara CMD of SCI said that the calling of this most modern Indian flagged box vessel as a remarkable day for the company. He said that SCI would continue to support the trade by investing in new vessels and launching services on new routes. Mr Hajara presented a memento to the Master of the vessel, Capt Pangtey on the occasion.
Mr SS Hussain chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust assured all support to SCI by way of faster turnaround and other services.
Mr JN Das SCI’s director for Liner and Passenger Services added that that even though the times were tough, SCI was there for the trade and would even consider reducing freight rates if necessary and possible. He called on the exim trade as well as the Port authorities to extend support to the national line’s services. He said that it would be beneficial for SCI to invest in new builds in these recessionary times when rates were low.
