Underground rail network planned for the Education City outside Doha
Sunday, 17 May 2009

MEED reported that Qatar is planning to build an underground light rail network serving the Education City development outside Doha.

The system will be part of a much larger rail network serving the rest of the country that is planned by local developer Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company.

Germany's Deutsche Bahn is working on the conceptual design for the national railway system which is made up of five components.

They include an east coast rail link for passengers and freight between Ras Laffan and Mesaieed via Doha; a high speed link running from New Doha International Airport through Doha city centre and on to Bahrain across the Qatar Bahrain Causeway; a freight link connecting into the planned GCC rail network; a Doha metro network and a light rail system serving new developments to the north of Doha, such as Lusail, West Bay and Education City.
