Exim News Service reported that the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust completes 2 decades of successful operations on May 26th.
Launched on this day in 1989, it has come a long way, emerging as a premier container Port in keeping with the fast growth in containerization and the primary gateway of the country.
However, JN Port was the fastest to reach 50 million tonne in cargo handling among the Major Ports and expeditiously crossed the throughput milestones of 1, 2, 3 and 4 million TEUs. And while the global economic downturn did impact its performance in 2008-09, with throughput falling to below 4 million TEUs, it is sure to bounce back, what with the economy showing signs of recovery and its many infrastructure augmentation plans in various stages of implementation.
