Hyundai Motor Co said that its accumulated sales in Africa have topped 1 million units, 33 years after entering the market on the continent.
Hyundai began shipping the Pony, the first Korean car, to Liberia in 1976. The company's annual sales in Egypt, Nigeria and other African countries topped 100,000 units in 2005.
Its market share in Africa stood at 11.6% in 2008, the second highest after Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan. It sold a total of 53,000 units in Egypt in 2008, becoming the nation's number 1 auto brand.
