Rail Cargo Austria, the subsidiary of Austria's national railways OBB, has announced the launch of cross border freight transport service in Romania. This event coincided with the Austrian national freight operator entering the Romanian market, thus becoming the first foreign freight operator present in Romania.
The ceremony was held in Bucharest, at Gara de Nord railway station and it included the presentation of the type of locomotive that will operate on the route which will initially include the Romania northern section of Corridor IV, Curtici Arad. The locomotive will be Taurus, produced by Siemens. This project has already been implemented in other countries in Eastern Europe and that is why RCA chose to extend this service in Romania as well.
Mr Cătălin Glăvan, head of the Romanian branch, said that they hope to extend this service in Romania, which will enter service in 30 days. At present, they are making several test runs in order to adapt the service to the signaling system on the Romanian railways.
