Deep sea port at Sonadia to be completed by 2016

It is reported that the first phase construction works for deep sea port at Sonadia offshore island of the Bay would be completed by 2016 accelerating shipping operations.

Bangladesh’s shipping minister Mr Shahjahan Khan further said that on completion of construction of the deep sea port, vessels of 14 meter draft would be able to berth at the new seaport.

He said that in the first phase, it would be possible to handle 2.384 million tons of cargoes and 1,780,000 TEUS containers per year.

He added that “From this deep-sea port BDT 1580 crore will be earned annually.”

The deep sea port is planned, as big ships could not reach the country’s existing seaports in Chittagong and Mongla.
