Vale Canada workers plan protests in New York and London
Friday, 23 Oct 2009

Bloomberg reported that Vale SA striking miners from Canada plan to hold protests against the company in New York and London this week even after the iron ore producer canceled events with investors.

United Steel Workers union said that workers scheduled a protest in front of the New York Stock Exchange and a demonstration in London’s financial district on October 23rd 2009, where Vale had planned the meetings. Workers also plan protests in Rio de Janeiro and Toronto today.

It may be noted that more than 3,000 miners went on strike at Vale's Sudbury nickel mine in Canada July 13th 2009, after USW affiliated workers rejected a proposed labor contract. They were joined by workers from Vale’s Voisey’s Bay mine in Newfoundland August 1st 2009.

Mr Saba Mozakka, an officer at the Workers Uniting union coalition in London, said that miners will organize a series of demonstrations in the city in November to draw attention to the dispute with Vale.
