
Finnish Stainless steel giant Outokumpu announced that it will mainly focus on high end application segment in India including the applications in the growing energy sector by supplying its premium grade steel to upcoming challenges in power projects which include nuclear, renewable and fossil energy as well as applications in Oil and gas, chemical processing industries, coastal bridges and desalination plants where human safety and process efficiency elements play a key role.
Mr YP Suri Country Head of Outokumpu India said “These high end requirements are delivered by high quality stainless steels which form a key material in power generation. There is no other industry other than nuclear power production where absolute reliability is most crucial. Outokumpu being the oldest manufacturer with over 80 years of experience for supply of stainless steel plates for the emerging nuclear power applications is recognized by all leading nuclear engineering companies as a reliable supplier.”
Mr Suri added that “Similarly Outokumpu’s long experience is tackling corrosion and materials expertise provide an important service for thermal power producers as well, enabling them to control emissions efficiently. Outokumpu is the market leader and a pioneer in using stainless steel in flue gas cleaning. Outokumpu’s duplex grades boost cost-efficiency in biofuel production. Other green energy applications served by Outokumpu cover the whole range of renewable energy sources, from hydro and ocean-wave power to solar energy.”
Mr Suri also said that “Currently the overall demand level of stainless steel flat products for industrial segment in India is around 400,000 tonnes. The demand for Industrial grades is set to grow 3 to 4 times in the next 8 to 10 years. In the absence of domestic capability to manufacture high end products including duplex and super duplex range of stainless steel for hostile Industrial applications, Outokumpu has a major role to play in India.”
