The Statesman reported that Mr MC Bhandare Governor of Orissa has asked district authorities to test the water released from Nalco for any possible pollutant. The Governor was prompted to do so when a school boy of Sevasram in Tentulei village complained of contaminated water.
Mr Bhandare said that mental and physically challenged children had inherent talent which needs to be identified and tapped so that they excel. He asked concerned authorities to ensure proper supply of water, electricity and other facilities to the students. Meanwhile, Nalco, in a release issued here explained that a high power committee had visited the ash pond to study its stability and safety. He said that the height of ash pond dykes is being increased from 104 metres to 107.5 metres. With this, the ash slurry could safely be stored for approximately 2 more years.
The company has also been allotted an abandoned quarry in Bharatpur area for ash filling. After evaluating the technologies available for back filling the void and reclamation of the land, Nalco has initiated a time bound action plan. This is being apprised to the statutory authorities for necessary clearances.
