37 Killed and 60 Wounded in Attack on SEMAFO Employees in Burkina Faso

Canada based mining company with gold production and exploration activities in West Africa, SEMAFO Inc has reported on Novemer 6 that there was an attack on the road between Fada and the Boungou Mine site in the Est region of Burkina Faso by unidentified armed individuals. The incident happened approximately 40 kilometers from the Boungou Mine. The convoy, escorted by military personnel, comprised five buses transporting SEMAFO national employees, contractors and suppliers. Information from Burkina Faso authorities said that currently there are 37 fatalities and 60 wounded. Benoit Desormeaux, President and CEO of SEMAFO, said "We are devastated by this unprecedented attack. Our sincerest sympathies go out to the families and colleagues of the victims. Our priority is their safety, security and well being. Given the scale of the attack it will take some time to properly deal with it and we will do our utmost to support all those affected."

SEMAFO said “Boungou mine site remains secured and our operations are not affected. We are actively working with all levels of authorities to ensure the on-going safety and security of our employees, contractors and suppliers. The company would like to express its sincere sympathy to families of the victims in addition to its firm support of Burkina Faso's security forces.”

SEMAFO operates Mana Project, Boungou Project, Bantou Project, Nabanga Project in Burkina Faso and Korhogo Project in Cote d’Ivoire. Bantou Project in Diapaga Greenstone Belt in Burkina Faso, 90% ownership, has proven and probable reserves of 10.9M tonnes at 3.94 g/t for 1.4M oz of contained gold, measured and indicated resources of 3.6M tonnes at 2.89 g/t Au for 0.4M oz of contained gold and unferred resources of 1.9M tonnes at 2.78 g/t Au for 0.2 Moz of contained gold

In August 2018, a Semafo employee and a subcontractor were killed when a bus carrying workers was targeted by bandits, and five police officers were killed in another attack a few days earlier.
