Altos Hornos de Mexico, Mexico’s major steel producer, managed to reach record high production in 2018, though the increase was small. In 2018, the company’s crude steel output reached 4.523 million tonne (3% up YoY), one of the highest production levels in its operating history. It said “This volume was the result of the full operation of the new units included in the Fenix Project and the subsequent investments to add value, aimed at maximizing the installed capacity and generating a greater variety of high specification steels.”

Finished steel production totaled 3.915 million tonne, up by 6% YoY.

According to Luis Zamudio Miechielsen, the general director of AHMSA and subsidiaries, the 2018 operating results reflect the gradual consolidation of new units and at the same time endorse the productive efforts of the entire staff, from mining operations to steel mills.

AHMSA has an installed crude steel capacity of 5 million tpy. It produces HRC, CRC, wide plate in coils or sheets, tinplate and tin-free steel and structural shapes for the construction industry.
