The Texas Department of Transportation announced that the developer of the New Harbor Bridge Replacement Project, Flatiron/Dragados, LLC, has selected Arup-CFC as the new engineering design firm to oversee design work on the main spans of the New Harbor Bridge. Arup-CFC will lead a team of experts responsible for reviewing, recertifying and completing the design of the New Harbor Bridge. TxDOT last year suspended design work on the bridge, dismissing then-designer FIGG Bridge Engineers Inc, following an National Transportation Safety Board report. With a new engineering firm in place, TxDOT and FDLLC will work together to develop a schedule for project completion.

Corpus Christi is a coastal city in the county of Nueces and located in the US state of Texas, on the mouth of the river Nueces. It was founded in 1838 and had an estimated population of 300,000 in 2010, with chemical and zinc, aluminum, etc. metallurgical industries. It is also a major port for petroleum and cotton. Due to its location in the Gulf of Mexico, it is a popular venue for fishing and marine and outdoor sports windsurfing.

The new bridge will replace the current steel bridge that was built between 1956 and 1959 to replace a drawbridge and services 26,000 vehicles every day, but has an insufficient height for large vessels to enter the port.
