Bigadan and Ørsted have signed an agreement whereby Bigadan is to take over Ørsted’s 40% ownership interest in the Kalundborg Bioenergi plant. As a result, Bigadan becomes the sole owner of Kalundborg Bioenergi and will continue to operate the plant. Mr Karsten Buchhave, CEO of Bigadan said that “We’ve had an excellent collaboration with Ørsted on several biogas projects – not least on the large, jointly owned biogas plant in Kalundborg which we’ve developed together. We regret, but respect Ørsted’s decision to withdraw from biogas. However, we’re pleased that, by acquiring Ørsted’s shares in Kalundborg Bioenergi, we’ve secured the future operation and ownership of the plant for the benefit of our employees and our business partner.”

Ørsted has decided not to include biogas production in its strategy for the future because it sees better growth opportunities within wind and solar power.

Mr Martin Barlebo, Head of Group Communication at Ørsted that “Kalundborg Bioenergi is a great example of the ‘symbiosis’ mindset in Kalundborg, and that’s why we’ve been involved in the project from the outset. Biogas is an important element in the green transformation, but we’ll have to prioritise which areas we want to invest in. And since it won’t be biogas production, it makes sense for Bigadan to take over our ownership interest in Kalundborg Bioenergi.”

The agreement between Bigadan and Ørsted also includes Ørsted’s two upgrading plants in Fredericia and Horsens, respectively, which upgrade biogas to renewable natural gas. The upgrading plant in Horsens is affiliated to Horsens Biogas, which is already owned and operated by Bigadan. The upgrading plant in Fredericia is affiliated to Fredericia Wastewater & Energy A/S.

The agreement between Ørsted and Bigadan is subject to regulatory approval, and the transaction is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2019.
