BYD announced that it has taken third place on Fortune Magazine's “Change the World” list 2019, which is the American publication's annual ranking of companies that are using the creative tools of business to help the planet and tackle society's unmet needs. The Shenzhen-based new energy technology firm's inclusion on the list was based on its successes in building a flexible “e-platform” for EV design and construction, its competitive pricing that's helped further commercialize EVs, and the recent deal to jointly develop electric vehicles with Japan's Toyota that are set to expand its global reach. According to the magazine's Sustainable Leadership Monitor, BYD scored highly in metrics like Environmental Innovation, CSR Strategy and Company Management.

BYD was not only the sole EV maker in this year's prestigious ranking, but also the only Chinese company to make the top ten, and just one of three Chinese companies to make the overall list of 52, which includes respected honorees like Quallcomm (#1), MasterCard (#2). Apple (#16), IBM (#22), and more. BYD also previously made its debut in the ranking back in 2015, thanks to its prowess in developing battery-powered buses for tackling urban pollution across China and the world.

The ranking, now in its fifth year, is selected in partnership with Fortune's expert partners at Shared Value Initiative, a global platform for organizations seeking business solutions to social challenges; and FSG, a nonprofit social-impact consulting firm. Fortune editors and writers then evaluate and rank the companies based on their measurable social impact, business results, degree of innovation and corporate integration.
