TOI quoted Panchayat minister Mr Mauvin Godinho as saying that till antipollution measures are taken, handling of coal and bauxite should not be permitted at the Mormugao port. The BJP MLA from Dabolim told reporters, “If you have to shut operations of handling coal at the Mormugao port, then it should be stopped.” He said that it is possible to put anti-pollution measures in place on the lines of Jaigarh in Maharashtra where a dome resembling a huge umbrella has been assembled and all works are done inside. If such handling is there, then not only coal but other types of cargo can be allowed. But there should not be pollution of even 1%.”

He said that “Besides coal, I have learnt that bauxite is also being handled. People don’t realize that bauxite handling is more dangerous than coal itself. When you look at the port, they are doing it from the mooring dolphin. From there they take it directly to the Alcon jetty. It is much more dangerous.”
