World’s No 1 copper producer Chile’s Codelco has closed its Chuquicamata copper smelter and refinery to prevent a further spread of covid-19 among its staff, following the death of a third worker this week. Codelco announced that as a preventive measure and in view of the complex situation in the Antofagasta Region and the city of Calama due to the Covid-19 health emergency, the Chuquicamata Division has determined to stop its smelting. This new measure is transitory in nature and aims to reduce exposure in the areas, and reinforce preventive efforts and controls for the safety and health of people in the division. In the same way, this initiative allows to focus the productive efforts in the mine and concentrator areas, business units that under all safeguards, will continue to contribute the generation of fundamental surpluses so that our country can better face this pandemic.

The initiative contemplates the decrease of about 400 people, the arrest of teams and the reduction of production rates in both areas. The measure considers continuing with minor operations and preventive maintenance.
The demobilization of personnel, both their own and collaborators, will be carried out progressively and according to the end of shifts.
