Montel reported that European front-quarter coal prices jumped 4.5% to a 10-week high of nearly USD 66 per tonne in trading, buoyed by the prospect of heightened power demand, technical indicators and strengthening freight rates. The front-quarter API 2 contract surged USD 2.80 to USD 65.70 per tonne – the highest since early May on a rolling basis – while the Cal 20 rose USD 2.40 to a nine-week high of USD 70.75 per tonne, on Ice Futures.

A coal analyst with a European energy firm said the gains in part reflected “thin liquidity” coupled with the prospect of increased German power demand, in light of possible load reduct.
