SNC-Lavalin Group member Atkins has been appointed by Danish planning company Femern A/S, to provide consultancy services for a railway that will run through a new tunnel linking Denmark and Germany. The agreement will last eight years with potential for extension. The 18km Fehmarnbelt link is an immersed tunnel which will cross the Fehmarn Belt in the Baltic Sea to connect the Danish island of Lolland and the German island of Fehmarn. Featuring two electrified rail tracks and a four-lane motorway, it will become the world’s longest road and rail immersed tunnel when completed in 2028.

Atkins will deliver multidisciplinary railway consultancy services throughout the project, which will include the track, overhead catenary system, power supply, signalling, train control system and telecommunications. Atkins will also collaborate with German engineering firm GAUFF, who will focus on the German elements of the new railway.

Designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h, the dual track line will see seven-minute journey times between Denmark and Germany – a massive reduction compared to the hour it currently takes by ferry.
