Calabria is celebrated the start of a public work that promises a new opportunity for economic growth and employment in southern Italy through the revival of infrastructure investment. At Francavilla Marittima in Cosenza province, the first stone was laid for the Mega Lot 3 of the Ionian Highway, which will create 1,500 direct and indirect jobs. The EUR 980-million project, commissioned by state road agency ANAS as part of a eur 1.3-billion initiative, will be done by the Webuild Group, recently created under Salini Impregilo’s Progetto Italia plan to consolidate, strengthen and relaunch the country’s infrastructure sector.

The Mega Lot 3 of the Ionian Highway foresees the construction of a new section of the SS-106, from the junction with highway SS-534 (km 365+150) in Sibari to Roseto Capo Spulico (km 400+000) in the region of Calabria. Work is expected to last seven years.

The section will be 38 kilometres, running for one kilometre along the historic route to connect the Ionian coastlines found in the regions of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia. It will also create a link between the A3 Highway and Puglia. The first 18 kilometres of the new highway will cross flat terrain while another 18 kilometres will run along the coast and a plateau with valleys. It will have 11 tunnels and 14 viaducts with some piers up to 100 metres in height in an area with complex terrain. The project requires the kind of expertise that Webuild Group has acquired from the construction of 80,291 kilometres of roads and highways throughout the world.
