AP reported that a methane gas explosion in a coal mine has killed at least four miners and trapped 13 others. Local police official Wajeet Khan says the blast happened Sunday in the village of Sanjdi, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Quetta. He says rescuers have retrieved four bodies and that 13 other miners are missing and feared dead, with rescue operations hindered by the gas leak.

Personnel associated with Levies, Frontier Corps (FC), and Mines & Mineral Development Department have reached the Sanjdi coalfield site soon after the incident was reported.

While it is unclear what caused the blast in the Sanjdi mine, on the provincial capital's outskirts, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) for Quetta said the pit workers were located in a tunnel at a depth of some 4,000 feet.
