Economic Times reported that Great Wall Motors, China's largest SUV and pick-up truck maker, has finally decided to enter India with products the company believes will help it compete effectively in the crowded passenger-vehicle market. The move follows China's biggest automobile company Shanghai Automotive's decision to roll out a slew of products. According to several people in the know, Great Wall Motors, which already uses India as the technology hub for coding software for electric vehicles and artificial intelligence, has begun hiring for the local automotive business to be launched around 2021-2022.

The company recently hired Mr Kaushik Ganguly from Maruti Suzuki to craft its India blueprint, said several people in the know. Mr Ganguly was one of the key executives in the product planning department at Maruti Suzuki. An email sent to Great Wall Motors remained unanswered.

The decision to enter India comes after multiple studies Great Wall Motors had undertaken in the last five years. The significant shift toward the growing SUV segment and increased government focus on electric vehicles speeded up the decision to operate here.
