Vedanta group firm Hindustan Zinc Ltd said it's eyeing capacity of around 1.35 million tonne by 2021. In an interview with CNBC-TV18's Mr Manisha Gupta, Mr Sunil Duggal, chief executive officer and managing director, said that "Silver has been a very successful story in last 10 years. From nowhere we have come to 8th or 9th rank in the world in terms of silver production and the kind of profile we have set in for ourselves, I think we should reach 3rd or 4th spot in the next 3-4 year time. However, we have set ourselves to come to the second spot globally in the next 5-6 year time."

He added that "We use around 7,000-8,000 tonne of silver and we are the only captive silver producer in the country. So having grown from what we were and what we are, it is around 10 percent of the contribution from almost zero which was about 10-15 years back, is being done.”

On the expansion front, Mr Duggal said that “As far as zinc and lead is concerned, we have been on the expansion spree and by the end of this year, we will have a production capacity of 1.2 million tonne."
