The Indian government on Wednesday extended compliance deadline on tougher import rules for some grades of steel, primarily used by automakers until April 17. Steel Ministry vide two orders, dated February 20, said “In pursuance to the enforcement of the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2018 dated 13th August, 2018, Ministry of Steel hereby informs that all the grades available in Indian Standards IS: 4454 (Part-I): 2001, IS: 4454 (Part-ll): 2001, IS: 11169 (Part-I): 1984 & IS: 6603: 2001, IS 6527 : 1995 & IS 6528 : 1995, IS: 4454 (Part-I): 2001, IS: 4454 (Part-ll): 2001, IS: 11169 (Part-I): 1984 & IS: 6603: 2001, IS 6527 : 1995 & IS 6528 : 1995 shall remain outside the purview of the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2018 till 17 th April, 2019.”

Compliance to the new rules had been earlier set for February 17, but strict adherence to the regulations would have stalled production for India’s auto industry. India’s auto manufacturing sector is dominated by Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Hyundai Motor Co, Honda Motor Co and Ford Motor Co. Auto companies had asked for an extension until the end of 2019.
