Indian Steel Industry performance in April – December 2017 - JPC

As per the latest provisional data from JPC, Indian crude steel production during April-November 2017 was 75.5 million tonnes, a YoY growth of 4.6% YoY production for sale of total finished steel was 79.3 million tonne, up by 5.6% YoY, while consumption of total finished steel saw a growth of 5.2% to climb to 64.9 million tonne. Import of total finished steel increased by 10.9% YoY to 6.1 million tonne while export of total finished steel was up by 52.9% to 7.6 million tonnes.

Crude Steel - During April-December 2017, crude steel production was 75.498 million tonnes, a growth of 4.6% YoY. SAIL, RINL, Tata Steel, Essar, JSW & JSPL together produced 43.39 million tonnes during April-December 2017, up 6.5% YoY. The rest i.e. 32.108 million tonnes came from the Other Producers, which was a growth of 2.1% YoY. Overall crude steel production in December 2017 (8.652 million tonnes) was up by 2.6% over November 2017 and was up by 3.2% over December 2016. For the 1st time and creating records, India’s crude steel production crossed the 100 million tonne mark in 2017, reaching 101.227 million tonnes, a growth of 5.87% over 2016.

Hot Metal - During April-December 2017, hot metal production was 49.38 million tonnes, up by 1.4% YoY. SAIL, RINL, Tata Steel, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 40.67 million tonnes during April- December 2017 which was a growth of 3.07% YoY. The rest i.e. 8.71 million tonnes came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 5.6% YoY. Overall hot metal production in December 2017 (5.619 million tonnes) was up by 0.1% over November 2017 and was down by 0.4% over December 2016.

Total Finished Steel Production for sale - Production for sale of total finished steel at 79.294 million tonnes, registered a growth of 5.6% during April-December 2017 over same period of last year. SAIL, RINL, Tata Steel, Essar, JSW & JSPL together produced 46.174 million tonnes during April-December 2017 which was a growth of 9.7% YoY. The rest came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 6.2% over same period of last year. Overall production for sale of total finished steel in December 2017 (9.194 million tonnes) was up by 4% over November 2017 and was up by 3.7% over December 2016.

Exports - Export of total finished steel was up by 52.9% in April-December 2017 (7.606 million tonnes) over same period of last year. Overall exports in December 2017 (0.964 million tonnes) was down by 5% over November 2017 and was up by 28.9% over December 2016.

Imports - Import of total finished steel at 6.096 million tonnes in April-December 2017 was up by 10.9% over same period of last year. Overall imports in December 2017 (0.561 mt) was down by 8.8% over November 2017 and was down by 26.4% over December 2016.

Consumption - India’s consumption of total finished steel saw a growth of 5.2% in April-December 2017 (64.867 million tonnes) over same period of last year, under the influence of rising production for sale and imports. Overall consumption in December 2017 (7.621 million tonnes) was up by 10.9% over November 2017 and was up by 6.2% over December 2016.
