Metalloinvest’s Andrey Varichev Mikhailovsky GOK launched pilot production of premium quality iron ore pellets DR-grade to produce hot briquetted and direct reduced iron. Pilot batches of new pellets were delivered to Lebedinsky GOK and OEMK and are successfully undergoing industrial testing for the production of HBI and DRI. Following the results of testing, the technical and economic indicators of DR-grade pellet production will be refined. Based on these, a decision will be made on the commercial production of new batches. The total iron content in pellets is about 68% while the level of harmful impurities, silicon dioxide and sulphur, is extremely low, at 1.4% and 0.003% respectively, meeting the requirements of the global market for high-quality DR-grade pellets.

Production of DR-grade pellets at Mikhailovsky GOK is the result of implementing flotation technology for the production of high-quality concentrate at the enterprise. In the course of a series of laboratory tests, Mikhailovsky GOK specialists developed production technology delivering flotation concentrate with an iron content of over 71% and silicon dioxide content of around 1% using raw materials supplied by Lebedinsky GOK. As a result of industrial tests at the flotation site, flotation iron ore concentrate was successfully produced in the planned volumes and at the planned consumption ratio. Then, the technology for producing iron ore pellets from flotation concentrate for the metallisation process was worked out at the pelletising unit.
