Work to create a new public square and active travel hub at the heart of Dundee Waterfront’s GBP 1 billion renaissance is now underway. Morgan Sindall Construction broke ground on the GBP 6 million project last week, having been appointed by Dundee City Council. Called Waterfront Place, plans for the site, adjacent to the V&A Museum of Design, include a landscaped 7,000 square foot ‘urban beach’ surrounded by bench seating and a 2,150 square foot active travel hub offering cycle hire and storage. The single-storey active travel hub will have a striking design to match the popular neighbouring museum

In addition to illuminated footpaths to encourage all-day usage, there will be soft landscaping including grassed dunes, and hard landscaping comprised mainly of Dutch brick. Plans also include a water feature with pop-up water jets, and an area set aside for a future interactive play park. The council is still finalising designs for this but intends for it to be an area which brings art, technology and play together.

Construction is expected to complete by the end of spring next year. [2021]
