TOI reported that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has granted two vessels permission to handle coal at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) mooring dolphins as part of an aero modelling study by BITS Pilani to determine whether there would be any pollution. Around 70,000 tonne of coal will be handled before the onset of monsoon. GSPCB chairman Mr Ganesh Shetgaonkar told TOI, “We have given permission because there is wind this season, which will enable them to conduct the study. But we have told them to stop operations if the wind speed exceeds 30 kmph and to complete the study before the monsoon sets in.”

Mr Shetgaonkar said the pollution control board has directed MPT to complete coal handling in the dry season.

However, the board will install its Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) during the study. If required, two officials of the board will monitor the coal handling, which expenditure will be borne by MPT.
