The new Western Australian Museum in Perth in Australia, designed in joint venture by international design practices Hassell & OMA, will be open to public on 21 November 2020. Formed with renovated heritage buildings and new additional volumes, the Museum in the city’s cultural precinct has been designed to offer new possibilities for sharing the State’s rich natural and cultural collections.

The Western Australian Museum includes additional spaces for exhibitions and events, capacity for international touring shows, and new retail and dining opportunities. It has been conceived as a framework to present diverse stories of Western Australia to both local and global visitors, and a place to forge dialogues between the State and the world. Two intersecting circulation loops connect the historical buildings and new volumes, while offering a variety of curatorial possibilities. A sheltered public space known as the City Room will be a place for cultural events and accessible to everyone for daily gatherings.

Hassell + OMA worked collaboratively with Managing Contractor Multiplex to deliver the project, with the architectural team led by Hassell Principal Mark Loughnan, OMA Managing Partner – Architect David Gianotten, Hassell Principal Peter Dean and OMA Regional Director Paul Jones.

Details for the opening festival between 21 and 29 November and preview ticket experiences will be announced by the WA Museum later this year.
