Times of India reported that an ambitious project to connect ports in the state with national highways will be launched by NHAI under Bharatmala Pariyojana Programme of the ministry of road transport & highways (MORTH). Vizhinjam, Thankassery, Alappuzha, Kochi, Munambam, Ponnani, Beypore and Azheekkal will get connected to the nearest highway by NH-standard roads. A total of 192 km roads will be renovated at an estimated cost of INR 3,782 crore.

When MORTH prepared the list of port connectivity roads under the new Bharatmala programme in December, the state has noticed that it has got only a small share of 18 km of the total approved 1,294 km. Soon the senior officials of PWD approached Union minister Mr Nitin Gadkari and made a presentation of a proposal to ensure a better connectivity between all ports in the state. Mr Gadkari gave in-principle approval to include the project under the Bharatmala scheme.

Thus, all ports in the state - Vizhinjam, Thangassery, Alappuzha, Cochin, Munambam, Ponnani, Beypore and Azheekkal will get an improved connectivity. The NHAI will start widening works once a communication in this regard will be passed to them by MORTH.

PWD principal secretary Mr G Kamalavardhana Rao said that the different links in the proposed coastal highway had been identified for development under port connectivity. He said that “The MORTH has asked NHAI to prepare DPR for the widening of the proposed stretch. The average width of the road will be 12m.”

PWD hopes that the coastal highway and development of national highway parallel to it would provide a big boost to the ports in the state. The proximity of the rail line to the coasts is another highlight.

According to Natpac report, the alignment of the coastal highway was finalized keeping in mind to connect the important ports in the state and to connect the ports with the major roads including the National Highway network. Multimodal connectivity of goods can be achieved once the Coastal Highway is fully operational since the railway line is quite near and parallel to the coastal highway. All the major ports are either along the coastal highway alignment or very near to the alignment. With the port connectivity under Bharatmala, the issue of connectivity of highways to the port will be solved.
