Bnamericas reported that Grupo México's mining division Southern Copper plans to make USD 76 million improvements to Ilo complex in the Moquegua region of southern Peru. The modifications are intended to achieve environmental improvements in the mineral preparation zone, replace potable water pipelines, incorporate more desalinated water tanks and reduce the frequency of production stoppages at the desalination plant, among other objectives, according to the supporting technical report that the company submitted to the environmental certification service for sustainable investments Senace. The term for execution of the works is 60 days.

In Peru, an ITS is used when modifications to an environmentally approved project are not expected to cause a significant environmental impact.

The Ilo complex has a smelter, a refinery and other associated facilities.

In late May, Southern received authorization from the health ministry to restart operations at its Cuajone and Toquepala open-pit mines, at the Ilo refinery and at its administrative offices, after restrictions imposed by the government to stop the spread of COVID-19.
