ET reported that after the Centre gave ONGC the nod for environmental impact studies in the delta districts, concerned farmers and Tamil outfits threatened widespread agitation against the move, accusing an ulterior motive behind the project. The oil firm is planning to dig 40 hydrocarbon wells in the districts and is expected to carry out the pre-project studies after obtaining Centre’s nod. The farmers organisations stated that they objected to all kinds of hydrocarbon and neutrino schemes as they are implemented in Tamil Nadu with an intention to ruin the state, and would protest against the move. The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam would stage demonstration at the headquarters in five delta districts on June 1 demanding the state and the Centre shelve the projects.

This apart, various Tamil outfits are voicing concern about the latest developments in ONGC’ plan to dig oil well across delta districts. KK R Lenin, the founder and president of movement against destruction, said that farmers would form a human chain from Villupuram and to Ramanathapuram from 5.30 pm to 6 pm on June 12.

Mr Lenin said that “While Puducherry chief minister N Narayanasamy is rejecting the union government’s nod for hydrocarbon project, Tamil Nadu chief minister Edapadi K Palaniswami remains silent on the issue.” P R Pandian, president, all farmers associations’ coordination committee, alleged that leaders of the ruling parties in the state and Centre had promised that they would not allow the projects before the election. After the polls, they changed their stand.

DMK president MK Stalin, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss and AMMK general secretary TT V Dhinakaran condemned the Centre’s decision to allow ONGC to execute hydrocarbon projects in 40 places, which are proposed to be established in delta districts such as Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts.
