US coal generation likely to decline by 12% - EIA

Montel citing, the country’s Energy Information Administration, as saying that coal-fired power generation in the United States is likely to decline by 12% this year as new gas-fired power plants come online faster than scheduled. As a result, the EIA has also revised down its expectations for US coal production, doubling its previous forecast rate of decline. It now expects the US to produce 693m short tons of coal this year, down from 754m last year.

Exports have helped vent a domestic supply glut and last year reached a record 15% share of production.
