Usiminas announces Q1 performance details

Brazilian steel maker Usiminas’s steel sales fell to 1 million tonne in the first quarter, a 7.8% YoY decline. Exports fell to 119,000 tonnes down by 30% YoY, while domestic sales fell by 3.7% to 885,000 tonnes. Steel production at Usiminas' Ipatina and Cubatão steel production plants fell to 977,000 tonnes, a 9% decrease compared to the 1.1 million tonne produced in the first quarter of 2018. The company said it processed 356,000 tonnes of purchased slab in the first quarter, 11% decrease from the first quarter of 2018.

Iron ore sales rose in the first quarter on higher domestic demand after the fatal collapse of Vale's dam at Brumadinho. Usiminas' first quarter iron ore sales volumes rose to 1.9 million tonne, up by 5% YoY, despite a drop in production. Iron ore production in the first quarter fell by 1.8% to 1.3 million tonne in the previous year. Export volumes decreased to 868,000 tonne, a 20% drop compared to the 1.1 million tonne exports in 2018, while domestic sales to third parties more than doubled to 416,000 tonnes from 167,000 tonnes year over year.
