Vale announced that its Voisey’s Bay Mine in Labrador was awarded the national John T Ryan Trophy in the Select Mines category for its outstanding safety record during 2019. This is the sixth consecutive year that Voisey’s Bay has received this prestigious national award and in doing so has set the record in that division. Over this six-year period, Vale has achieved 6,438,725 combined hours with a reportable injury rate of Zero at its Voisey’s Bay Mine Site in Labrador. Vale’s North Atlantic Operations and Asian Refineries Chief Operating Officer Dino Otranto said ‘I’m extremely proud of every single employee at Voisey’s Bay, each of whom made a significant contribution to achieving this national honour and in doing so, set a new record in the Select Mine category by winning for six consecutive years. This recognition demonstrates the commitment from all of our people at the Voisey’s Bay site to genuinely care for each other by actively identifying and managing risks in our workplace that have the potential to cause harm.”

The John T Ryan Trophies are CIM Awards of Excellence given to mines in three categories: Metal Mine, Coal Mine and Select Mine, which includes open pit mining. In each category, the award is given to the mine that experiences the lowest injury frequency during the previous year in all of Canada.
