Denver Post reported that coal miner Bowie Resource Partners is abandoning its plan to convert coal waste into electricity and diesel fuel at its idled Bowie #2 mine near Paonia.

An engineering consultant for Kentucky-based Bowie Resource, which operates one coal mine in Colorado and three in Utah, on Thursday asked the state to withdraw its application to develop what would have been Colorado’s first coal gasification plant, which would have converted up to 72 tons of coal waste a day into energy.

Local residents and environmental groups were critical of the proposed facility and urged Bowie to host public meetings to discuss the plan, which sought to develop a modular facility using “a state of the art gasification process operated in a closed, oxygen-deprived environment … creating virtually no pollution.”
