Regional Hygiene Station in Ostrava announced that 82 employees of the state-owned coal miner OKD’s Darkov coal mine in Karviná in the Moravian Silesian Region in Czech Republic and six of their relatives, have been found to have COVID-19 following blanket testing conducted. Approximately 600 samples have been processed thus far, revealing the infection in 82 employees. An additional 300 tests are currently being processed. OKD executive director Radim Tabášek however said that none of the employees had a serious case of COVID and that operations at the mine would continue without any changes.

The Czech Republic closed schools, shops and borders soon after the outbreak started in March but now Czech government has eased the regulation which obliges people to wear face masks in public.

OKD is the only producer of bituminous coal in the Czech Republic. Its coal is mined in the southern part of the Upper-Silesian Coal Basin in the Ostrava-Karviná coal district.
