Data and analytics firm GlobalData in latest report said that global coal production is set to grow by just 0.5% in this year, as efforts to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic have hampered production in China. It said “Production was expected to reach 8.17 billion tonnes this year, compared with 8.13 billion tonnes in 2019, after three consecutive yearly increases. Disruption to date has been most significant in China. Coal production declined by around 6% in the first two months of the year as workers could not return to mine sites due to prolonged Lunar New Year holidays as well as road blockages and lockdowns to control the outbreak of the virus.”

GlobalData senior mining analyst Vinneth Bajaj said “Across the globe, compared with other commodities, coal production is only expected to be marginally affected by the impact of the coronavirus as thermal coal mines are permitted to operate during lockdowns as they are deemed essential to maintain power supplies.”

And in India, around 845 million tonnes of coal is expected to be produced in 2020, 8.3% increase compared with 2019.
