Illawarra Mercury last week reported that workers of the Metropolitan Colliery in Helensburgh have been evacuated due to high levels of carbon dioxide and methane gas. The NSW Government resources regulator was notified of the incident around 6PM on last Thursday that workers had been withdrawn from the mine. They said "Inspectors are currently onsite monitoring the situation and workers are prohibited from re-entering the mine until investigations have been completed and it has been assessed as safe to return underground.”

CFMEU Industry Safety and Health Representative Stephen Barrett has been in contact with the mine and explained the situation was not a good thing but can happen occasionally. He said "They've had a floor break in their long-wall tail gate which has contaminated the atmosphere. It's cracked up the floor in the roadway and the gases from seam below have come up."
