US coal production dips 3pct from prior week - EIA

Platts reported that weekly US coal production totaled an estimated 14.5 million st in the week ended June 23, down 3% from the prior week and 5.4% from the year-ago week, data from the US Energy Information Administration showed. Production in Wyoming and Montana, which is mostly made up of output from the Powder River Basin, totaled an estimated 6.46 million short tons, down 2.6% from the prior week and 1.7% from the year-ago week.

On an annualized basis, production in the two states would total 336.8 million short tons, down 4.2% from last year.

In Central Appalachia, weekly production totaled an estimated 1.9 million short tons, down 2% from the week prior and 1.8% from last year. Annualized production would total 97.6 million short tons, up 6.6% from 2017.

Output from northern Appalachia totaled an estimated 1.9 million short tons, down 5% from the prior week and 12.9% compared with last year. Annualized production would total 101 million short tons, down 3.9% from last year.

In the Illinois Basin, production totaled an estimated 1.7 million short tons, down 3.1% from the week prior and 10.9% from last year. Annualized production in the basin would total 102.8 million short tons, down 0.8% from 2017.

Through the first 25 weeks of the year, US coal production totals an estimated 362.3 million short tons, and would total an estimated 753 million short tons on an annualized basis, down 2.7% from last year.
