The Energy Information Administration said as it revised an earlier forecast, US coal production is likely to fall 9% this year amid greater domestic competition from renewables, gas and falling exports. The EIA sees the US producing 684 million short tons (620 million tonnes) of steam coal this year and 640 million short tons next year.

It said that coal production will continue to fall as both domestic consumption and exports, which reached a five-year high in 2018, are forecast to decline.
