Total US domestic coal distribution was an estimated 143.1 million short tons (MMst) in the second quarter of 2019. This value is 3.9 MMst (2.7%) lower than the previous quarter and 3.1 MMst (2.1%) lower than the second quarter of 2018.

Wyoming was the leading coal-origin state, accounting for about 64.9 MMst of shipments delivered to 26 states. Texas was the leading destination state, receiving about 15.3 MMst of domestic coal.

Coal shipments moved via railroad, river, and truck accounted for an estimated 69.7%, 13.5%, and 9.3% of total coal shipments, respectively. Tramway and conveyor deliveries, which are traditionally associated with minemouth power plants, accounted for about 7.4% of coal shipments.

Electric utilities and independent power producers received about 91.6% of the total coal shipments.
