State gas transport company Ukrtransgaz said that Ukraine has accumulated 13.1 billion cubic metres of gas in its storages as of June 24, up 20% on the same date last year, in preparation for the 2019-20 heating season. The head of state-run energy firm Naftogaz, Mr Andriy Kobolev, said that the country needed to increase gas reserves to 20 billion cubic metres this year to cover its winter needs and to guarantee transit to European consumers amid uncertainty over Russian gas transit via Ukraine next year.

Ukraine's 10-year agreement with Russia expires on January 1st, but Kiev and Moscow have not started negotiations about future conditions yet.

Ukraine consumed 32.3 billion cubic metres of gas in 2018 of which it imported 10.6 billion cubic metres. For the heating season from mid-October to April, Ukraine stored 16.9 billion cubic metres of gas.
