New Lisbon Airport Montijo Gets Environmental Approval from APA

The Portuguese Environment Agency gave a favourable opinion conditioned to Montijo Airport, through a set of counterparts totalling EUR 48 million. APA said “The proposal for an Environmental Impact Statement for Montijo Airport and its accessibility was issued by the Portuguese Environment Agency. The favorable day is conditioned, thus enabling the project in the environmental aspect. The DIA includes a package of environmental mitigation and compensation measures amounting to about EUR 48 million.”

The DIA points to birdlife, noise and mobility as three main environmental concerns and the set of compensation measures includes EUR 7.2 million plus EUR 200,000 per year for ICNF to invest in bird protection, EUR 20 million for the soundproofing costs of both public and private buildings, and up to EUR 10 million to be paid to Transtejo to make it better on the Tagus by acquiring two new ships.

ANA Aeroportos de Portugal said “It sees with surprise and apprehension some of the measures for minimizing and compensating for the proposed environmental impacts, but will evaluate in detail within the defined legal deadline. In accordance with the applicable procedure, ANA Aeroportos de Portugal will analyze the feasibility, balance and environmental benefit of these measures, as well as their implications based on the previously agreed assumptions for the project.”
