Workers at the construction site of the new Genoa bridge welcomed the New Year with the setting of the sixth section of the structure’s deck between Pier 3 and 4, as well as the installation of the 12th pier out of a total of 18. Some 300 metres of the new bridge are now visible thanks to the relentless work performed by the PERGENOVA joint-venture between Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri Infrastructure to reinstate a crucial link between Genoa’s port and the surrounding Ligurian region. The workers rose the section 48 metres into the air in order to carefully set it between the piers. Weighing 520 tonnes and running 50 metres in length, the section was flanked by four side covers. On the ground, workers prepared the remaining piers in reinforced concrete as well as the sections, including the central spans measuring 100 metres in length that will stretch above the Polcevera River. The sections were made by Fincantieri at its plants in Valeggio sul Mincio, Castellammare di Stabia and Sestri Ponente.

Once completed, the bridge will be equipped with technology that will make it a sustainable piece of infrastructure. It will have solar panels to generate the electricity needed to power its lights, sensors and other systems that will help provide a constant monitoring of the structure. There will also be robots to inspect its soundness and conduct regular maintenance.
