TOI reported that the National Highways Authority of India has identified the contractor for constructing the flyover bypassing the Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited factory campus and its township located on Trichy-Thanjavur NH-83. Since the land required for the proposed flyover is readily available with the NHAI, officials sources said that the civil work for the flyover will be taken up within two months. The Bhel factory and the township situated on either side of NH-83 near Thuvakudi, with a population of around 15,000, is criss-crossed by the employees daily. As frequent fatal and non-fatal accidents were reported, NHAI Thanjavur project implementation unit in December 2018 proposed a flyover bypassing the factory.

Since a suitable contractor to execute the work was not found, a re-tender was floated by NHAI in March 2019.

An official source with NHAI said that the contractor has been instructed to complete the flyover which will have six lanes, within a period of 12 months. At an estimated cost of INR 49.50 crore, the proposed flyover will have a length of 1.5 km and connect Bhel training centre with Thiruverumbur taluk office. Around 19 acres of Bhel’s land is likely to be utilised for the proposed six-lane flyover to make the highway safe.
