Port of Mariupol freight volumes soar 32.3pct YoY

Cargo traffic at Ukraine’s Port of Mariupol in January 2018 totaled 455,860 tonnes, which represents a 32.3% growth YoY, Ports of Ukraine reports referring to the press office of the seaports of Ukraine Sea Ports Authority (USPA). In the reporting period exports volume rose 15.1% to 388,260 tonnes, imports surged by 10.6 times to 52,900 tonnes and domestic traffic increased by 6.7 times to 14,700 tonnes.

Handling of suction cargo leaped by 94.3% to 99,690 tonnes and break bulk volume rose 29.2% to 356,170 tonnes.

State-owned Port of Mariupol located in the Taganrog Bay north-western part of the Sea of Azov is currently the fourth largest port in Ukraine, a gateway for intermodal transport routes. The port annual projected capacity exceeds 17 million tonnes. The Port of Mariupol can accommodate merchant vessels with length of 240 meters and draft up to 8 meters. The Port encompasses 73.2 hectares with 18 terminals and 3,657-km-long quay wall.

In 2017 freight throughput at the Port of Mariupol dropped 14.3% year-on-year to 6,51 million tonnes. The port’s handled volumes accounted for 4.9% (5.7% in 2016) in total throughput at the country’s seaports.
