Mr Rinkesh Roy, Chairman, Paradip Port Trust, announced the commencement of dredging operations at the Mahanadi River mouth. Addressing the media during the PPT Foundation Day programme, he said the work will cost an estimated INR 15 crore and will carried out by the dredging firm Reach Dredging Ltd, Kolkata. It may be noted that a major fishery harbour is operational at Paradip, located at the right bank of the Mahanadi River about 1 km upstream of the river mouth. The harbour is presently managed by Odisha’s Fisheries Department. The local fishing community has been facing difficulties as the river mouth has been silted over the years and hence the fishing vessels face hindrance in navigating during their approach/exit from the harbour. The Mahanadi River mouth was last dredged almost 20 years back.

Mr Roy informed that there is a narrow window period between January and February to complete the work smoothly in tranquil conditions, adding that PPT has set a completion target of February 2019 for the contractor.

A release said that the Ministry of Shipping has approved this project which will be funded through the internal resources of the port. It is hoped that this PPT initiative will alleviate the woes of the local fishing community that have lasted for almost two decades.
