The Hindu reported that the South Central Railway is likely to create a record by transporting 120 million tonnes of freight by the end of this fiscal. SCR is transporting coal, cement, fertilizers, and raw material for steel plants, imported iron ore, foodgrains and other commodities to various destinations. As on January 31, 2018, SCR transported a record 100.052 million tonnes of highest-ever freight during the current financial year, and earned INR 8,655 crore revenue. The freight loading during the same period last year was 82.619 million tonnes. The freight earnings registered a growth of 26% so far, when compared to the previous financial year. Principal chief operations manager Mr N Madhusudhana Rao said “We loaded 53.555 million tonnes of coal, 22.948 million tonnes of cement, fertilizers 5.374 million tonnes, imported iron ore 5.183 million tonnes, 3.925 million tonnes of foodgrains and other goods this year.”

The Krishnapatnam Port-Venkatachalam-Obulavaraipalle new railway line works are under progress. Once the project is completed, significant freight loading can be expected, according to the railway authorities.

The railway officials said that “Krishnapatnam Port is one of the major freight loading source for the SCR. The Krishnapatnam Port-Venkatachalam-Obulavaripalle new line provides vital rail connectivity between two major routes and reduces distance by 72 km for the trains coming from Guntakal division to Krishnapatnam and decreases traffic in Obulavaripalle-Renigunta and Gudur section.”
