Chilean copper production surged to its highest level so far this year in August, reaching 517,902 tonne. Chile government data showed that the August production was 11.1% up from the same month of last year. Statistics agency INE attributed the increase in output to higher ore grades as well as maintenance work carried out in August 2018. The figure confirms the recovery in copper production in Chile, the world's leading producer of the metal, from the first half of the year when output was slowed down by adverse weather conditions, maintenance shutdown and labor disruptions.

Production during the first eight months of the year totaled 3.817 million tonne, down 0.6% from the same period of last year.

Last month, Mr Octavio Araneda, incoming CEO of state-owned mining giant Codelco said that the company could increase copper production by as much as 30% during the second half of the year as it resolves technical problems at its metallurgical operations and mines higher-grade ore from the new underground operation at Chuquicamata.
